The Toronto Tempo have yet to put a team on the WNBA court, but the expansion franchise already has a slam dunk for a head coaching hire.

Women’s basketball reporter Howard Megdal revealed on Wednesday that two-time WNBA championship winner Sandy Brondello will be the Tempo’s first head coach.

Brondello’s shocking exit from the New York Liberty hit a season after she won her second WNBA title as a coach, the Liberty’s first. The Tempo landing Brondello should fast-track the team’s competitive edge, given that the roster assembly goes as hoped. You can’t overstate what a big deal this is for the expansion program.

Brondello seemed like a great fit for teams like the Seattle Storm and Dallas Wings, but those franchises will now have to go in a different direction. The biggest coaching free agent is headed to Toronto, as the city gets another big win in the same week the Toronto Blue Jays make the 2025 World Series.

If the Tempo take off like the Golden State Valkyries did in their first season, Brondello will be a big reason as to why.
