On Monday, Louisville shocked the college basketball world when they landed a commitment from London Johnson, a 21-year old who has spent the last few years in the NBA’s G-League. On Wednesday, Michigan State basketball head coach, who has famously derided many developments in college basketball in the past few years, took a few moments to go on a classic Tom Izzo-style rant about the move by Louisville.
“To me, it’s ridiculous. To me, it’s embarrassing,” Izzo said about the move.”
Izzo made it clear that he felt this was ‘sprung’ on his staff and coaches around the country and joked that he’s going to call Magic Johnson and Jaren Jackson Jr. and have them come back to play since they didn’t use all of their eligibility up when they went pro early. Izzo also noted that what he thinks is most unfair about this new trend is that it takes opportunities away from high school seniors who have already committed to their programs. Finally, Izzo did say that he doesn’t want people to blame the players in these situations, but really, fans should blame the ‘adults in the room’ who are making these decisions.
