SMU Women, Texas A&M Men Leading In-State Dual Meet After Day One
The swim and dive teams of Texas A&M have traveled north to Dallas for a two-day competition against SMU. The women’s teams were evenly matched throughout the day, with SMU taking advantage of an early relay DQ for A&M to build a 83-81 lead entering Saturday’s action. The A&M men, meanwhile, are up 97-67.
The SMU team of Jimena Leal, Izzy Krantzcke, Anne Marie Vlaic and Maddy Parker finished second in the 400 medley relay, but the disqualification of the Texas A&M “A” team for a false start gave the Mustangs the win in 3:36.94. Krantzcke finished more than a second clear of the field in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.22), and Vlaic came from behind to beat A&M’s Katie Walker in the 200 butterfly, 1:58.78 to 1:58.98.
Parker was first in the 100 freestyle (48.87), and she led off a 200 free relay team also including Summer Osborne, Chloe Corbin and Madeline Herbert that took the win in 1:30.18, a quarter-second ahead of Texas A&M, to secure SMU’s narrow advantage heading into day two.
Rachel Love opened the scoring for the Aggie women with a top time of 10:04.82 in the 1000 free, followed by Kaitlyn Owens taking first in the 100 backstroke in 53.27. Giulia Goerigk finished well in the 200 IM to top teammate Hannah O’Leary, 2:01.91 to 2:01.95. Gabrielle Filzen won 3-meter diving (283.50).
On the men’s side, Texas A&M’s Bucky Gettys began building the lead for his team with a win in the 1000 free, clocking 9:01.61 to hold off teammate Batuhab Filiz while Munzy Kabbara completed the Aggie sweep. Roberto Bonilla Flores came through in the 100 breast (53.73), and the 200 fly went to Alejandro Michelena (1:45.71). Ben Sytsma topped the field in the 100 free (43.87).
Closing out individual racing was another 1-2-3 sweep for the visiting team. Kabbara won the 200 IM in 1:45.69, with Logan Brown and Bonilla Flores second and third, respectively. And in what was their only relay win of the day, the team of Ben Scholl, Jack Madoch, Chase Swearingen and Sytsma posted a time of 1:18.48 to win the 200 free relay.
The SMU men pulled off an impressive win in the opening event of competition as Jack Berube, Kristaps Mikelsons, Sage Sungail and Benjamin Chateigner beat A&M by 0.12 in the 400 medley relay, 3:10.81 to 3:10.93.
