Rey Mysterio isn’t exactly feeling the love from his son, Dominik Mysterio — and not just on-screen.
The WWE Hall of Famer recently opened up about a birthday gift gone wrong during a GOAT session with rapper Quavo at ComplexCon, revealing that Dominik’s present was so underwhelming it left him questioning how much his son really appreciates him. During the interview, Rey was asked about the worst gift he’s ever received, and he didn’t hesitate to throw his son under the bus.
“The worst thing he’s bought me. It was a birthday gift. We were already going through the storyline where I’m a deadbeat dad. For a present, he gave me a Padres hat. I love the Padres, but a hat? Come on, dude. You’re making more money than me. He didn’t buy me shit.”
Rey’s jab was clearly tongue-in-cheek, but it also says a lot about their current father-son dynamic — both in and out of the ring. On television, Dominik has spent the last year calling his dad a “deadbeat,” turning their family feud into one of WWE’s most talked-about storylines.
Later in the same ComplexCon session, when someone shouted out that Dominik was the greatest heel of all time, Rey didn’t hold back his response.
“F*ck my son.”
After getting that out of his system, Rey named Ric Flair, Chris Jericho, and the late Eddie Guerrero as some of wrestling’s best villains.
“When Eddie (Guerrero) was a heel, he was vicious. You have that fine definition of being a heel and completely not liked, or Chris Jericho, who was a heel but he made you laugh so much. If I had to pick a real heel, there have been so many, Ric Flair, without a doubt. He talked the talk, walked the walk. If you wanted to be a bad guy, you wanted to be like him.”
Rey Mysterio is currently recovering from an injury he suffered in April, but it’s clear his sense of humor — and his frustration with Dominik — are still intact.
Do you think Rey was joking about Dominik making more money, or is there some truth behind the shade? Drop your thoughts in the comments and tell us whose side you’re on — father or son.
