Mission Viejo to Host Five Dive Teams Ahead of 2028 Olympics

Mission Viejo Nadadores announced this week that it has entered agreements to host athletes from five countries for training camps before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The club and city of Mission Viejo signed a multi-year agreement with the Dutch Olympic and Paralympic teams. It also will host the dive teams of Australia, France, Canada, Germany and a delegation from USA Diving at the Marguerite Aquatics Complex.

Several of those teams will conduct training camps in California in 2026 and 2027 as preparation for their staging for the 2028 Olympics.

“We are so excited to essentially be a significant training hub in the world,” Mission Viejo Mayor Robert Ruesch said in a press release. “We cannot wait to have the German, Canadian, Dutch, Aussie, French and American athletes call Mission Viejo their home away from home in 2028.”

Mission Viejo was an active participant in the 1984 Olympics, hosting the men’ and women’s cycling road races. The 2028 event won’t venture that far down Interstate 5, but the city’s aquatics facilities will play a role in the preparation.

It furthers Mission Viejo’s goal to be “a sports mecca and hub for sports and events tourism” that has been at the heart of Nadadores since the club was founded in 1968. Its swim club, one of the most successful in the United States, has had a representative at each Olympics since 1976.

“We selected Mission Viejo for our pre-Olympic training camp because its world-class facilities offer the ideal environment for our athletes, coaches, and staff to focus, train, and build momentum toward the Games,” said Andree Pouliot-Deschamps, the senior director of elite performance at Diving Canada. “Having visited before, we were impressed by the warm welcome and exceptional hospitality. Mission Viejo provides the perfect setting to prepare our team for success at Los Angeles 2028.”

“We have found our dream training facility to optimally prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games,” Diving Germany national head coach Christoph Bohm said. “We are particularly pleased that we will be able to prepare together with other major diving nations such as Australia and, above all, the United States.”
