Louisville Earns Double Dual Sweep of Tennessee, Auburn

Louisville Scratches Out Double Dual Sweep of Tennessee, Auburn

Louisville picked up a two wins on both the men’s and women’s side in a double dual meet Thursday, including narrow wins over Tennessee.

The Cardinals were just nine points better than the Volunteers men’s team in the double dual with Auburn at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, a 145.5-146.5 win. The Louisville women bested UT, 154-144. The winning margin over Auburn was wider, but the Vols handled their SEC foe in both meets.

Louisville’s men got an early jump on the competition. The quartet of Rian Graham, Finnley Conklin, Aiden Musso and Nikita Sheremet went 1:23.58 to open with a win in the 200 medley relay. The Cardinals added 1-2 finishes in two of the first three individual events, with Tommy Bried (9:03.74) leading Max Hatcher in the 1,000 freestyle and Filip Kosinski (46.23) besting teammate Jackson Millard by three tenths in the 100 backstroke.

Kosinski added a win in the 200 back in 1:41.41, with Millard second again by .22 seconds this time. Millard was .06 off a win in the 200 individual medley, teammate Gregg Enoch winning in 145.43. Jake Eccleston won the 200 breaststroke in 1:54.47 for Louisville.

Gui Caribe was the men’s meet’s standout for Tennessee. The Brazilian Olympian split 18.28 off the end of the Vols third-place 200 medley relay. He went 18.77 to dominate the 50 free, then 41.61 to boss the 100 free, with teammate Nikoli Blackman second.

Blackman and Caribe (41.14) joined Pedro Sasone and Kamal Muhammad to win the 400 free relay in 2:48.02, the fifth-fastest time in program history.

Muhammad won the 100 butterfly in 46.10. Martin Espernberger won his specialty 200 fly in 1:42.01, 2.5 seconds ahead of the field. Koby Bujak-Upton went 4:19.31 to win the 500 free. Bennett Greene scored 400.80 points on 1-meter and 402.40 on 3-meter, the latter a 1-2 with teammate Frazer Tavener.

Auburn picked up two wins in the front half of the meet, with Daniel Kirchevsky going 1:32.72 in the 200 free. He edged Guy Brooks of Louisville by .16 and Blackman by .24. Uros Zivanovic went 53.01 to win the 100 breast, a race where the top five were separated by .34 seconds.

Louisville bookended its triumph with relay victories from the same quartet. Julie Mishler, Caroline Larsen, Ella Welch and Julia Dennis went 1:34.21 to win the 200 medley relay, then 3:10.27 to claim the 400 free.

Dennis won the 50 free in 21.21, edging out Tennessee’s Camille Spink by .09 seconds, with Larsen third. Spink won the 100 free in 46.53, but Larsen was second and Dennis third. Welch won the 100 fly in 51.64. Kim Herkle and Mia Cheatwood went 1-2 in the 200 breast, a race where four swimmers went 2:10-point. Cheatwood was second and Welch third in the 100 breast.

Tennessee’s Ella Jansen was the standout individual of the day with three wins. The Canadian Olympian went 1:43.33 to dominate the 200 free, 1:56.25 to win the 200 IM and 4:38.86 to claim the 500 free. The latter event featured 1,000 free winner Daria Golovaty of Louisville, who finished second, and Jansen’s UT mate Emily Brown, who finished third after winning the 200 fly in 1:55.33.

Tennessee’s Emilie Fast was in the 100 breast, going 59.54, one of three sub-minute performances, and Sophie Brison claimed the 200 back.

Auburn got a swimming win via Lora Komoroczy going 51.99in the 100 back, ahead of Mischler by .17 seconds. She was second to Welch in the 100 fly. Auburn’s Emily Hallifax won 1-meter diving and was second on 3-meter to Desharne Bent-Ashmeil of Tennessee.
