After Iowa women’s basketball dismantled Division II-level Ashland by a score of 104-63 from Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the Hawkeyes‘ lone preseason matchup of the 2025-26 campaign, head coach Jan Jensen spoke to the media on the injury status of sophomores Teagan Mallegni and Chazadi “Chit-Chat” Wright.
Mallegni left in the first quarter after being fouled by an Ashland player, who made incidental contact with the 6-foot-1 sophomore guard. As a result of the contact, Mallegni hobbled off the court and headed towards the locker room for assessment. While she did return to the Hawkeyes’ bench in the second quarter, Mallegni would not enter the game at any point afterwards.
“I haven’t heard from the trainer, but it was really weird when Teagan got that kind of weird foul. She just hit her ankle and really tweaked it in a weird way, and so she was gonna try to play, but she’s having a hard time putting pressure on it, so kind of a freak thing,” Jensen said.
“So I don’t know if it was just a one-day thing or if it’s a longer-day thing. We’ll know a little bit more tomorrow.”
As for Wright, the injury occurred late in the fourth quarter at midcourt, after the transfer guard appeared to be suffering from a cramp in her left calf. With the score already well out of hand in favor of the Hawkeyes, Jensen subbed Wright out for the remainder of the contest.
“‘Chit-Chat’, I think, was just cramping,” Jensen added.
“I think it was just a really bad cramp, and at that point, I need to get some other people minutes. Fingers crossed that they’re both just a kind of a weird thing.”
With Iowa’s regular-season opener on Nov. 3 against Southern, Mallegni and Wright will certainly have more than enough time to get treatment for their ailments. However, the status of both sophomore guards will be something to keep an eye on over the next couple of days.
