Arizona Sweeps Two-Day Meet Against SMU and TCU

The Southern Methodist University Mustangs welcomed a pair of Big-12 opponents, regional rival Texas Christian and the University of Arizona, for a two-day dual meet in Dallas. Arizona was the top team across the board, defeating both the Mustangs and Horned Frogs.

The Wildcat women opened the meet by beating SMU in the 400 medley relay by eight hundredths. Lila Lille, Eleni Gewalt, Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhangh and Riley Bottom finished in 3:35.08. Later, Gewalt was the only swimmer to break 1:00 in the 100 breaststroke (59.91), and Julia Wozniak came in first in the 100 freestyle (48.53). Arizona’s Allie Sando finished first in 1-meter diving (266.05), and the team of Patricija Kondraskaite, Bottom, Sheikhalizadehkhangh and Wozniak finished off day one with another tight relay win, this time edging SMU by three hundredths.

The competition’s second day opened with Lille, Gewalt, Kondraskaite and Bottom winning the 200 medley relay in 1:38.76 before Bottom grabbed an individual win in the 50 free (22.54). Kayman Neal dominated the field in the 200 backstroke (1:54.38). The 100 butterfly went to Sheikhalizadehkhangh in 53.74. Kondraskaite, Wozniak, Bottom and Neal won the 400 free relay in 3:16.72.

SMU’s first win came courtesy of Jimena Leal in the 100 back (53.48), and Anne Marie Vlaic comfortably topped the 200 fly (1:57.59). Izzy Krantzcke touched first in the 200 IM (2:01.49), and Summer Osborne surged down the stretch to claim the top spot in the 200 free (1:46.31).

TCU’s Avery Dillon placed first in the 1650 free (16:35.14) and 500 free (4:50.09), and teammate Nina Vadovicova was first in the 200 breast (2:12.50). Taylor Steelman was the winner of the 400 IM (4:22.80) while Emma Herrera captured 3-meter diving (263.80).

The Arizona men’s team of Alex Desangles, Tavner Wisdom, Haakon Naughton and Tomas Lukminas took first in the 400 medley relay in 3:07.63. Desangles followed that up with a win in the 100 back (46.63), and Joel Nace won the 200 fly (1:44.46). Lukminas got to the wall in 42.30 in the 100 free, almost a half-second ahead of the anyone else, and Naughton was dominant in the 200 IM (1:45.96). Luke Hernandez won 3-meter diving (359.40), and the team of Taylor Luck, Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri, Lukminas and Jakey Hutchinson topped the 200 free relay (1:18.50).

On Friday, Duncan Henderson joined Wisdom, Naughton and Hutchinson as winners of the 200 medley relay (1:25.66). Lukminas got the touch in the 50 free (19.57), and Desangles completed the backstroke sweep in the 200-yard event (1:42.29). Naughton won yet again in the 100 fly (46.51), and Daleiden Ciuferri was quickest in the 200 free (1:33.60). Hutchinson, Lukminas, Luck and Daleiden Ciuferri combined to win the 400 free relay (2:51.45).

SMU’s Kristaps Mikelsons touched first in a tight 100 breast (54.05) while teammate Jack Forrest was the winner of the 500 free (4:22.95). Joe Umhofer took first in the 200 breast (1:58.54), with Mikelsons taking second (1:58.69) for the Mustangs’ only 1-2 finish. Andy Baklanov completed the slate of individual events with a top time of 3:52.80 in the 400 IM. Luke Sitz was first in 1-meter diving (361.00).

TCU’s Aaron Wilmes was his team’s lone winner in the 1650 free (15:20.69).
