West Indies T20 squad for New Zealand series announced; Matthew Forde back

by

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a full-strength squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which will be played from November 5 to 13. The Men in Maroon will face New Zealand after their thrilling T20I series win over Bangladesh, as they continue their preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The CWI selectors retained the core group from the Bangladesh series to ensure consistency and balance in the side. One of the biggest positives for the Men in Maroon is the return of all-rounder Matthew Forde, who makes a comeback after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Forde has completed his rehabilitation and return-to-play program and is now fully fit to take the field for the West Indies. His inclusion will be a big boost for the West Indies pace attack, which has faced several injury setbacks in recent months.

Additionally, Shamar Springer has also been called up to the squad to further strengthen the seam-bowling department for the upcoming T20I series against the Black Caps. Springer earned the recall to the side after Ramon Simmons and Jediah Blades were ruled out of the tour due to injuries.

Springer will provide more options and energy to the bowling lineup as the West Indies prepare to face the New Zealand side in the tough conditions.

Gudakesh Motie to miss the New Zealand tour due to bowling action

Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie will miss the tour following his poor form due to a technical issue with his bowling action.

Motie will now work closely with spin specialists through the Royals Sports Group—owners of the Paarl Royals franchise in South Africa—to correct his action and rebuild confidence.

The CWI took this decision to prepare Motie for the SA20 League in December and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, where he is expected to play a key role for the West Indies.

Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe has emphasized that this move will play a crucial role in ensuring the team is mentally prepared for major tournaments ahead.

Bascombe stated, “The addition of a mental skills and performance coach reflects our commitment to developing the complete cricketer. At the elite level, success is as much about mindset and composure as it is about technical ability.”

“Strengthening this area ensures that our players are provided with the necessary non-technical support geared towards equipping them to manage pressure and maintain focus.”
