Quiz: Obscure 2025 college basketball team or Christian rock band?

by

The 2025 college basketball season is officially upon us. Opening day means a couple of marquee matchups like Florida vs. Arizona or Villanova vs. BYU. It also means exponentially more games between low-major Division I programs and schools from the Division III, NAIA and NCCAA landscape you may have never heard of.

For example, Stony Brook opens its season against Farmingdale State, a D3 school that shares the same sunny island in New York. Florida International takes on Florida National with the winner declared “Florida Worldwide” for at least the next year (FIU, via its association with Pitbull, is a heavy favorite). Steph Curry’s alma mater, Davidson, opens with a game against DeSales, a member of the MAC. No, not that one.

Thus, it’s time to play one of my favorite games: college basketball program or Christian rock band? I’ve got 26 entries on this year’s list. All you have to do is tell me whether I’ve named a) a small-time college basketball team playing on November 3 OR b) a Christian rock band, as defined by Wikipedia.

I’ve taken out words like “college,” “university” or “tech” when appropriate so to as not give things away. I’ve also kept the names as ESPN’s scoreboard has them, so they may not be 100 percent correct but generally accurate. Answers follow at the bottom of the post.

Millsaps, Thomas (Maine), Mary Baldwin and Rivier are Division III schools.

Biblical Studies (whose women’s team is responsible for the worst loss in college basketball history via a 159-18 defeat at Grambling State in 2024), plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Midway, Huston-Tillotson, Evangel, Blue Mountain, Life Pacific, La Sierra are all NAIA schools.

Depaul is, allegedly, a member of the Big East, though no one seems able to confirm nor deny this.

All the rest are Christian rock artists.
