Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Monday that the decision to have quarterback Jayden Daniels on the field with Sunday night’s game out of reach in the fourth quarter was “100 percent on me.”
“I get that. I’ve been thinking about it nonstop, too, and, man, I missed it,” Quinn said. “That is 100 percent on me.”
Quinn said Daniels is out indefinitely after suffering a dislocated left elbow with 7:39 remaining in a 38-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Commanders were trailing 38-7 at the time of the injury.
Daniels scrambled to his right and was sacked at the Seattle 4-yard line by Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. Daniels’ left elbow was bent back on the tackle, and he was visibly in pain. Shunning a cart, Daniels walked to the locker room with a black air cast on his left, non-throwing elbow.
Marcus Mariota, who entered the game after the injury, will start in place of Daniels when the Commanders host the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Washington also lost cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who suffered a torn ACL, and wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, who suffered a broken collarbone on the opening kickoff against Seattle.
These blows are the latest in a season gone awry for Washington (3-6). The Commanders have been hit hard by injuries, with multiple starters already on injured reserve: running back Austin Ekeler, defensive ends Deatrich Wise Jr. and Dorance Armstrong, safety Will Harris and receiver Noah Brown. Receiver Terry McLaurin did not play Sunday and has now missed five games because of a quad injury.
McCaffrey has 11 receptions for 203 yards and three touchdowns this season.
