Former WWE star Maven is backing up Tyrus’ recent comments about CM Punk’s new World Heavyweight Championship run—and he isn’t holding back about why veterans struggle to step aside.
During his appearance on TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Maven agreed with Tyrus’ belief that Punk shouldn’t be focused on holding titles at this stage in his career, but he offered a more personal and psychological explanation for why it’s easier said than done.
The discussion came after CM Punk defeated Jey Uso for the vacant World Heavyweight Title at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Salt Lake City. The hosts asked Maven if he agreed with Tyrus, who previously said Punk should be “getting the young guys ready” instead of chasing championships. Maven didn’t hesitate to side with him—but also pointed out the reality behind the curtain.
“I agree with what Tyrus said. In a perfect world, he should be like that. But I mean, we’re in a male ego-dominated industry.”
He compared the wrestling locker room to high school, filled with egos that make it hard for veterans to step back and play a supporting role.
“Wrestling—I’ve said it—is high school. Other than the only difference is everybody in that locker room is the prom king and prom queen. It’s just—you have all these type A personalities. It’s hard to tell these ego-driven maniacs—myself being one of them at a time in my life—that, you know what? It’s time for you to play a different role within the company. That’s tough to hear.”
Maven said that while Tyrus is right about Punk’s role as a mentor, it’s natural for someone like Punk to still want one more big run before walking away.
“Tyrus is right—he should care only about that [putting people over]. But you know, he still thinks he’s got one more run in him. And who are we to say if he does or doesn’t? Usually, Father Time and injury makes that decision for you.”
Tyrus made his remarks during an earlier interview with TMZ Sports ahead of Punk’s title match, where he said Punk should be focused on elevating the next generation—citing Chris Jericho’s work in AEW as a model.
“I think Punk is at a point in his career where titles really shouldn’t be on the radar. Really, he should be getting the Breakers ready. He should be getting the young guys ready… I love Phil. He gave me a match, a title match on Monday Night Raw when at the time none of the other top guys would… But I also think there comes a point when it’s the other guy’s time. And who better to get somebody over than… look what Jericho was doing in AEW. How many guys did he make over there? So I think there comes a point where it’s not about the titles.”
CM Punk’s title win marks a huge moment in his comeback story, but Maven’s comments reflect a deeper truth about what it means to be a veteran in an industry that feeds on competition and pride. Whether Punk continues to elevate others or chase more gold, his latest reign is bound to keep fans talking.
