BYU could get a big boost in Lubbock on Saturday as ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Tuesday that star running back LJ Martin practiced Monday and is expected to play at Texas Tech.
Martin exited BYU’s game at Iowa State in the first half with a shoulder injury after carrying the ball five times. BYU leaned on Bear Bachmeier and the passing game to get out of Ames with a win and move to 8-0. LJ was #4 nationally in rushing yards going into the Iowa State, and has rushed for 789 yards and 5 TDs through 8 games.

The bye week came at a great time for BYU, giving LJ and others an additional week of rest. Running back is arguably the thinnest position on the team with backup running back Sione Moa out indefinitely, so getting LJ back versus Texas Tech is a big boost. We will see how physical he will be able to be with his shoulder, but even if LJ isn’t fully healthy his presence is big for BYU; much BYU’s success in the pass game has come off play action and the threat of LJ running the ball.
Converted safety Preston Rex has taken many of the running back reps behind Martin, but he has showed best this year as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. Bear Bachmeier has been a big part of the running game and figures to continue to be featured.
BYU and Texas Tech kickoff at 10am MT Saturday on ABC.
