Tennessee tipped off its 2025-26 women’s basketball season on Tuesday with a top-10 neutral-site matchup.
No. 8 North Carolina State defeated No. 9 Tennessee, 80-77. Tuesday’s season opener was contested in the Ro Greensboro Invitational at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Second-year Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell recapped the contest after the season opener.
“We scheduled this game to see where we were,” Caldwell said. “We wanted to see where we were early, so we had time to fix it. I think that’s exactly what we got out of it. We have a lot of things we can fix. We can get a lot better and we know where we’re at.
“That’s a very good basketball team. That team is going to be playing deep in March and we want to be, too. If we buckle down and fix the things we need to, there are some really eye opening things that we need to get under control, then we’ll get 15 points better from this loss.”
The Lady Vols will next play Friday versus East Tennessee State. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. EST at Food City Center (SEC Network+).
