Giannis Antetokounmpo jokes about NCAA eligibility, wonders if he can ‘suit up for Marquette’

All this national media noise about Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving the Milwaukee Bucks sooner than later has been an almost daily tired and frustrated refrain for local NBA fans.

But that doesn’t mean the man in the middle of all speculation can’t have a little fun with it. Apparently, Antetokounmpo is a bit curious about changing uniforms after all.

Instead of taking his brand of basketball excellence to another NBA team, Giannis jokingly hinted on social media Nov. 5 that he was considering a transfer, not a trade.

Assuming he was still eligible for his freshman season, he wondered if Marquette University coach Shaka Smart needed another body for some additional length and athleticism that night against Southern.

Since he’s averaging 32.3 points, 16 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game this season, we’re making an educated guess that Giannis wouldn’t have much trouble adjusting to the Big East schedule, especially with no back-to-back games. He could even bring Bucks coach Doc Rivers’ Marquette No. 31 out of the retirement rafters.

Marquette athletic director Mike Broeker got in on the laughs and was ready to welcome Giannis on campus.

All kidding aside, Antetokounmpo, now 30, was drafted by the Bucks with the 15th pick of the 2013 NBA draft when he was 18 years old. He’s been the subject of numerous trade rumors and recently addressed a report about a possible trade to the New York Knicks.

Antetokounmpo’s humorous post certainly drew plenty of reaction on social media from fans, including a few shots at ESPN reporter Shams Charania.
