Filip Nowacki Makes Senior GB Debut As 17-Strong Squad Selected For Short-Course Europeans
Aquatics GB has announced a 17-strong team for the European Short Course Championships that take place in Lublin, Poland, from 2-7 December.
Olympic relay champions Matt Richards, Duncan Scott and Freya Anderson will all travel to Poland two years after winning titles at the previous edition in Otopeni, Romania. Freya Colbert, Luke Greenbank, Ollie Morgan and Katie Shanahan return for successive editions of the championships having stepped onto the podium as Great Britain topped the medal table in 2023.
Also selected for his senior GB debut is Filip Nowacki. He won the 100/200 breaststroke double at the European Junior Championships with a continental junior mark of 2:08.32 in the latter while his 59.59 PB in the 100 comfortably bettered the British age group record previously held by a certain Adam Peaty. There was also silver in the 50. The Jersey swimmer followed that up with eight golds at the Island Games before he again completed the 100/200 double at the world juniors, going 2:07.32 in the longer race to go within 0.02 of Ross Murdoch’s British record of 2:07.30 from the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Aquatics GB Swimming Head Coach, Steven Tigg said: “We’re looking forward to taking a strong group of experienced athletes, along with some that are new to our senior team for the European Short Course in Poland. After a strong summer, particularly for our pathway, there was healthy competition for places with many athletes demonstrating a desire to participate. This meet plays an important role in refining skills and exposing athletes to international competition in short course cycle. We will use it to build on our learning from last season in order to be best prepared for our long course priorities of Commonwealth Games and Europeans.”
