Syracuse women’s basketball: Orange defense smothers UAlbany

by

Defense has been the name of the game for Syracuse basketball early this season. On Friday evening, the Orange women stifled the Great Danes of UAlbany and cruised to a 64-45 win to move to 2-0.

Syracuse ramped up the defensive pressure and forced 27 turnovers for the game. It was a slow start for both teams as the Orange held a 27-10 lead at the half. Things changed in the third quarter as Syracuse went on a 25-8 run behind 11-15 shooting from the field. Like the men, the 3-point shooting hasn’t been working but the Orange are finding other ways to generate offense.

Uche Izoje led the way with 14 points while Domonique Darius added 13 points and Angelica Velez contributed 10 points and 3 steals off the bench. Ten Syracuse players saw at least 10 minutes of action with only Camdyn Nelson and Laila Phelia playing more than 20. The only negative was the 2-10 mark from beyond the arc.
