The first week of the college basketball season is now in the books.
Here’s everything you missed in the opening week, and the latest Associated Press poll.
Arizona, Duke surge to start the season
Koa Peat made a massive move on opening night.

The freshman had an extremely impressive debut with the Wildcats last Monday while leading them past Florida 93-87 to kick off the year. The 6-foot-8 forward had 30 points and seven rebounds, and threw down several huge dunks in the process.
He had 18 points in their win over Utah Tech on Friday, too, and easily threw himself in the mix with the nation’s best right away. Thanks to the back-to-back wins, the Wildcats jumped up eight spots to No. 5 in this week’s poll. The Gators, who bounced back with a 40-point win over North Florida, fell to No. 10.
The top two spots in the poll remained the same this week, though both teams actually flipped. Houston jumped Purdue after it rolled over Lehigh and Towson. The Boilermakers beat both Evansville and Oakland. UConn moved up a spot to No. 3 after Florida’s loss.

Peat wasn’t the only freshman in the country to get off to a strong start. The Boozer twins led Duke to a perfect start last week, which included a 15-point win over Texas. Cameron Boozer, the five-star Rivals.com recruit had 15 points and 13 rebounds against the Longhorns, and then he on Saturday against Western Carolina.
Duke moved to No. 4 in this week’s poll. The Blue Devils will take on Army and Indiana State this week before a matchup with Kansas next week.
BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa had 21 points and six rebounds in his opener. Dybantsa is widely considered a top pick to go No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft next summer. The Cougars, who beat Villanova on Monday and then dominated Holy Cross on Saturday, came in at No. 7 in the latest poll. They’ll take on Delaware next and then UConn in Boston on Saturday.

UNC off to strong start
With his job potentially on the line, Hubert Davis opened the season perfectly last week.

Davis, now in his fourth season at the helm in Chapel Hill, and North Carolina started the season with back-to-back wins — including a 14-point home win over Kansas on Friday night. Caleb Wilson dropped 24 points in that outing to lead the way.
As a result, the Tar Heels jumped up seven spots to No. 18 in this week’s poll. The Jayhawks, on the other hand, fell to No. 25.
While Davis has been to the NCAA tournament three times, the Tar Heels had to play their way in last spring after missing it completely in 2023 by winning eight of their last 10 games. By North Carolina standards, just sneaking into the tournament isn’t anywhere near good enough. And with his buyout undoubtedly manageable come spring, it wouldn’t be surprising if North Carolina moved on from Davis should the Tar Heels have another disappointing run.
But at least so far, Davis and North Carolina are off to a very promising start. They’ll have to move on without guard Seth Trimble, however. He’s out indefinitely after he injured a bone in his left forearm during practice on Sunday. Trimble had 17 points and eight rebounds in the win over Kansas.

Thankfully, the Tar Heels have some time to adjust to live without Trimble. They’ll host Radford and NC Central this week before a key matchup with No. 17 Michigan State later this month.
