South Carolina women’s basketball guard Maddy McDaniel suspended before Clemson game

COLUMBIA — South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore guard Maddy McDaniel has been suspended, the school announced on social media.

The No. 2 Gamecocks are set to host Clemson on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. ET.

South Carolina women’s basketball posted this message on its X account: “Maddy McDaniel will not be at tonight’s game. She has been suspended.”

There were no other details regarding the length of her suspension or cause of it.

McDaniel, a 5-foot-9 guard was injured in the Gamecocks’ opening game vs Grand Canyon on Nov. 3. Coach Dawn Staley said the injury was a result of “knee to knee” contact. She was wearing a brace on the sidelines for the game Nov. 7 against Bowling Green but didn’t go in.

Staley said Nov. 10 McDaniel “probably” won’t play against Clemson. McDaniel was not seen toward the end of practice when media availability began, then Staley said McDaniel is rehabbing.

McDaniel is from Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

As a freshman McDaniel averaged 11 minutes and 3.1 points per game off the bench. This season she is likely to get more playing time serving as a backup for starting point guard Raven Johnson.

She scored eight points and had two assists in eight minutes against Grand Canyon before she was injured in the third quarter.
