In a commanding all-round display, New Zealand defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the fifth and final T20I at the University Oval, wrapping up the West Indies tour of New Zealand 2025 with a 3-1 series triumph. With the fourth T20I washed out, the hosts ensured there was no room for surprises, producing a disciplined bowling performance followed by a polished chase. Jacob Duffy once again emerged as the hero, bagging four wickets and claiming both Player of the Match and Player of the Series honours.
Jacob Duffy dismantles West Indies as visitors crumble to 140
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, New Zealand struck early and often. Duffy set the tone with a fiery opening burst, removing key batters and rattling the West Indies top order. His spell of 4/35 in four overs proved decisive as the Caribbean side failed to build momentum.
The visitors had brief resistance through Roston Chase (38 off 32) and Romario Shepherd (36 off 22), both of whom played important middle-order hands to push West Indies to a competitive total. Shai Hope‘s short but explosive 11 off 5 and Jason Holder‘s steady 20 gave the innings some shape, but regular wickets derailed their plans.
New Zealand’s bowlers shared the responsibility well. Jimmy Neesham chipped in with 2/31, while Kyle Jamieson, Michael Bracewell, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner picked up a wicket each. West Indies were bowled out for 140 in 18.4 overs, leaving the hosts firmly in control.
Tim Robinson and Devon Conway lay the foundation of a smooth chase
New Zealand’s reply was calm, calculated and confident. Tim Robinson gave the chase early acceleration with a stylish 45 off 24 balls, striking five fours and three sixes. His partnership with Devon Conway set the tone, ensuring the required rate was never an issue.
Conway anchored the innings with an unbeaten 47 off 42, playing the role of a steadying influence while rotating the strike with ease. Rachin Ravindra added a brisk 21 before Mark Chapman finished things off in style, smashing 21 off 13 with two sixes.
The hosts reached the target in 15.4 overs, comfortably sealing the match by eight wickets. West Indies bowlers struggled to create pressure, with Shamar Springer (1/8) and Shepherd (1/21) being the only wicket-takers.
Throughout the series, Duffy remained the standout performer with 10 wickets in 5 matches, rightfully earning the Player of the Series title. With the T20I series now wrapped up, the focus shifts to the ODI leg of the tour. The opening match will be played on November 16 at Hagley Oval, where both teams will aim to reset and regroup for the longer white-ball format.
