Iowa women’s basketball comments on McKenna Woliczko signing

by

Wednesday was a big day for the Iowa women’s basketball program.

Five-star forward McKenna Woliczko officially signed with the Hawkeyes. Woliczko is the highest-ranked signee in the Jan Jensen era so far and Iowa’s second highest-ranked signee in program history, trailing only Caitlin Clark. A 6-foot-2 forward out of Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, Calif., Woliczko signed with Iowa over fellow finalists South Carolina, USC and Ohio State.

Jensen met with the media on the first day of the early signing period to share her thoughts and reaction to Iowa officially landing Woliczko.

“She’s just a tremendous player. Obviously, one of the best in the country. The thing that I think is really special about her, she held even with an unfortunate injury last year. When you hold with sitting out, you know that the reputation and the skill level is really, really high.

“And she just is versatile. Boy, she can hit a three, but she handles the ball with ease. She can get to the rim, she rebounds, she’s smart, she’s a leader. Just a great, great kid. Great family. And getting that type of person first and foremost and then the type of player she is on top of it, that was just a really huge moment for us. Hawk fans are really going to enjoy watching her because she has a versatile game that’s…it’s smooth, it’s pretty and it’s very impactful,” Jensen said.

Woliczko was averaging 22.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on 59% shooting last year before suffering a season-ending injury, which coach Jensen alluded to. In her sophomore season with Archbishop Mitty, Woliczko averaged 22.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

Woliczko is ranked as the No. 6 player nationally, as the No. 2 power forward and as the No. 2 player in California in the 2026 class per 247Sports.
