According to Fightful Select, Ryder—real name Matt Cardona—isn’t signed to a WWE contract. The appearance was a one-off for the tournament, but there is a merchandise deal in place. That’s why fans saw new Zack Ryder gear suddenly pop up on WWE’s official shop after his return segment aired. WWE sources confirmed this arrangement and made it clear that while he’s not under contract, the door isn’t necessarily closed.
After the match, Ryder cut an emotional promo for WWE’s YouTube channel, reflecting on what it took to get back in the ring—even for just one night.
“Five years. It’s been five years since I put on Zack Ryder boots. Every single morning, the first thing I do, before I even open my damn eyes, is I [ask] ‘How can I get back here? What do I have to do to get back here?’”
He continued, pointing to everything he’s done since his WWE release in 2020:
“I’ve busted my ass for the past five years. Death Match King, the Indy-God, the complete, all for this moment. This might be a one-time shot. I might get the call tomorrow. It doesn’t matter. Because I’m Zack Ryder. And I’m always ready. Woo woo woo, you know it.”
Even LA Knight circled back after the bout to shake Ryder’s hand in a quiet sign of respect. The moment may have been short, but it landed. And with merchandise flying and fan reactions pouring in, it’s clear WWE sees the value in keeping the door open—even if just a crack—for another Zack Ryder run.
