Freya Colbert Maintains Winning Streak To Leave BUCS Championships With Six Solo Titles

Freya Colbert completed a medley sweep in the 100IM before dominating the 400 free as she finished the BUCS Championships in Sheffield with six individual titles.

Colbert, representing Loughborough, went past Katie Shanahan to take the IM title in 59.53 to 59.72.

She returned to the water for the 400 free in which she led throughout for a winning margin of almost three seconds in 4:01.96.

The Paris Olympian left Sheffield with armfuls of gold medals in the 200/400 free and 200 back plus the IM sweep. On top of that, she visited the podium as part of the Loughborough relay squads.

Colbert finished the three-day meet as top female and was central to Loughborough winning the overall title the at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) s/c meet.

Archie Goodburn, who won the 50/100m breaststroke double representing Edinburgh University, was the top male.

Loughborough University amassed 824 points to finish ahead of Stirling (814pts) and Bath (655).

Tyler Melbourne-Smith left Ponds Forge with three individual titles, adding a dominant 400 free gold in 3:40.48 to his 200 and 800 performances. The Loughborough swimmer went third in the British all-time rankings in the 800 on Saturday with his 7:38.99 the fourth-fastest time by a British man bettered only by Kieran Bird and David Davies. Melbourne-Smith also won the 200 in 1:44.05.

Ed Mildred completed a hat-trick of butterfly titles when he dominated the 200 event to win by more than three seconds in 1:53.82.

Mildred, who has flourished under the guidance of Ryan Livingstone at Manchester Performance Centre, took the 50 in 23.03 which followed his 50.76 victory over 100m on the opening day.

Angharad Evans swept the breaststroke events with victory by more than three seconds in the 200m. The Stirling swimmer was well ahead throughout the race and came home in 2:19.13.

It completed a fine meet at Ponds Forge for the Paris Olympian who won the 100 in 1:04.68, the sixth-fastest time by a British woman and one only she and Molly Renshaw have bettered among domestic women. That followed her 30.04 victory over 50m on the opening evening.

Evans then split 29.76 on the breaststroke leg as a Stirling quartet won the women’s 4x50m medley relay in 1:47.52.

Izabella Okaro was the only woman to break 25secs in the 50 free with the University of Birmingham swimmer clocking 24.69 for a clear victory. That followed her second place over 100 free. Thomas Leggett won the men’s title in 21.94.

Lottie Cullen (Ulster) rattled Danielle Hill’s Irish 50 back record in 26.61 and Cam Brooker (Bath) won the men’s title in 23.50.

Lucy Fox took the women’s 200 fly crown in 2:04.85. Alex Sanchez (Kingston) won the men’s 200 breast in 2:07.49, Matthew Ward of Bath won the men’s 100IM title in 52.78 and Stirling won the men’s medley relay in 1:34.58.
