Je’Von Evans is staring down the biggest opportunity of his young career—and he knows exactly what it could mean. At just 21 years old, Evans is the youngest star in WWE’s Last Time Is Now tournament, and the irony isn’t lost on him. When John Cena won his first championship in 2004, Evans hadn’t even been born yet.
The first hurdle? A massive one. Evans will go one-on-one with Gunther this Monday on WWE RAW in the opening round. And if he can somehow run the table, the reward is Cena’s final match ever—set for December 13.
Speaking with Cameron Hawkins of Yahoo’s Uncrowned, Evans reflected on the surreal nature of possibly closing out Cena’s career:
“I’ve always been a fan of Cena, especially me being younger. He always played to the younger fans. I’m so blessed to be in this position and have this opportunity. There’s a picture of my first WWE event — I’m wearing John Cena’s headband and wrist joints. This is insane.”
He didn’t pretend the road will be easy. But he’s already locked in on doing whatever it takes to get there:
“I know that the process to get into [Cena’s final match] is going to be trouble, for sure. It’s going to be mountains, it’s going to speed bumps, but I’m willing to get there. Whatever I need to do, whatever I’ve got to do, whatever helps me get to that match, to have that match with Cena, I’m ready to take all that on.”
And in a moment of raw emotion, Evans admitted that if he actually does face Cena, that could be it for him too:
“Bro, honestly, if that happened, I would probably retire with him. What can I do, man? I had Cena’s last match. You know what, Cena? You have my last match, too.”
Whether he wins or loses against Gunther on RAW, Evans isn’t done yet. The very next night, he’ll team with Leon Slater at NXT Gold Rush to challenge DarkState—Dion Lennox and Osiris Griffin—for the NXT Tag Team Titles.
Evans is putting himself in position to make WWE history, and he’s doing it with the same headband and dream that started it all.
