The inaugural Nations Championship will be played in 2026. Featuring a Southern Hemisphere home series in July and a Northern Hemisphere home series in November, the tournament will see the twelve competitors competing in two groups of six.

The competitors for the Nations Championship are the Six Nations teams (England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales), the Rugby Championship teams (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) plus Fiji and Japan.

The uneven number of teams in the Six Nations compared to the Rugby Championship has resulted in Fiji and Japan being placed alongside Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It means that the Southern Hemisphere includes a team from the Northern Hemisphere (Japan) and that the Northern Hemisphere is actually strictly European, that being the Six Nations.

The selection of the twelve teams comes with controversy as Georgia have been excluded despite being higher ranked than both Wales and Japan and having defeated these same two teams in away test matches in 2022 and 2025 respectively.

Argentina will be the only Men’s test team from Americas involved. Los Pumas will play host to Scotland, Wales and England in July 2026 and face Ireland, Italy and France away in November. There will be an additional match on the Finals Weekend at London’s Twickenham Stadium on November 27-29.
