Islam Makhachev’s coach explains why Team Khabib attacked Dillon Danis

Javier Mendez says Dillon Danis had it coming at UFC 322.

A huge melee broke out at the start of Saturday’s pay-per-view main card at Madison Square Garden between members of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s team and Danis. Punches were flying in a chaotic scene, which caused security and police officers to intervene. As a result, Danis was escorted out of the arena.

Mendez, who was cornering Islam Makhachev for his welterweight title win over Jack Della Maddalena in the main event, explained what happened.

“That guy, when is he going to grow up? What the hell is he doing,” Mendez told Submission Radio. “He was sitting in the fighters’ section and sitting where Team Khabib was, to boot. I mean, come on, dude. You know you’re asking for trouble. Then they showed me the videos of what he was showing, showing Ali (Abdelaziz) and Islam in a relationship-type embrace. Then he was doing things with a porn star and Islam embracing, and then he’s talking crap on other things.

“What do you expect when you do that? You go and sit with the guys, and you’re riling them up with big, huge disrespect. When Logan Paul’s girlfriend went after him, rightfully so because he was making her look like something she wasn’t, so she sued his ass. You’ gotta’ve got to stop that stuff. Stop picking on people’s religion, man. That’s what he was doing. He was making fun of it.”

During the UFC 322 post-fight news conference, White said Danis is now banned from attending UFC events after causing the brawl, but he won’t press any charges.
