Some teams like Bo Bichette as a shortstop. Others envision him elsewhere. Either way, he appears to have a long list of suitors in free agency.
Much of that interest stems from Bichette’s bat and relatively young age. After struggling during an injury-plagued 2024 season, Bichette bounced back in a big way, hitting .311 with 18 homers, 94 RBIs and an .840 OPS for the Blue Jays. He’ll enter 2026 — his age-28 campaign — with a lifetime .294/.337/.469 slash and a 121 OPS+.
There are some concerns about Bichette’s defense after he tied for last in MLB with -13 Outs Above Average in 2025, but that doesn’t seem to be scaring off shortstop-needy teams, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Braves and Tigers are among the contenders with a glaring hole at short.
Teams with established shortstops such as the Mets (Francisco Lindor), Phillies (Trea Turner) and Giants (Willy Adames) could also be in the mix for Bichette. Without getting into specifics, MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi reported earlier this month that multiple clubs were eyeing Bichette as a second or third baseman.
Add the Red Sox to that group, too. Boston has made no secret about its desire to add an impact bat after trading Rafael Devers in June and watching Alex Bregman opt out of his contract. WEEI’s Rob Bradford reports that the club is considering Bichette to fill that need.
A return to the Blue Jays can’t be ruled out, either, even with three-time Gold Glover Andrés Giménez capable of sliding over to handle shortstop duties, like he did while Bichette battled a knee injury during the 2025 playoffs.
After coming agonizingly close to a World Series title, the Blue Jays are expected to be one of this year’s most aggressive teams. They’ve been mentioned as a suitor for right fielder Kyle Tucker and could “conceivably” sign both Tucker and Bichette, Passan reports.
