Opening Odds: Ole Miss favored by a score in the Egg Bowl

by

Oddsmakers are fairly confident No. 6 Ole Miss can get through the Egg Bowl with a victory and cap off an 11-1 record to essentially clinch a College Football Playoff berth.

Fanduel Sportsbook opened with the Rebels (10-1, 5-1 SEC) as a -7.5 favorite over Miss. St. (5-6, 1-6 SEC). On Sunday afternoon, 69 (nice) percent of the money bet against the spread was in favor of Ole Miss while 81 percent of the bets against the spread were on the Rebels.

Ole Miss has not been a bettor’s dream by any stretch this season going 6-5 ATS, but the Bulldogs have overcome expectations from Vegas with an 8-3 record ATS.

Miss. St. is coming into the Egg Bowl on a two game losing streak including its latest loss at Missouri. Tigers running back Ahmad Hardy rushed for more than 300 yards in the game against the Bulldogs 121st ranked rushing defense.

The Rebels latest win came at home against Florida where Kewan Lacy rushed for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns to pace the offense in a 34-24 victory.

It does bear noting coach Lane Kiffin has only lost to MSU once in his Ole Miss tenure. Overtures from LSU and Florida to try and poach Kiffin from Oxford have been incredibly loud, and an announcement is forthcoming the day after the Egg Bowl.

Will the attention from the coaching searches cause Kiffin and Ole Miss to lose focus in this enormous rivalry game? Oddsmakers have the Rebels at -320 on the moneyline for the game, and in futures, Ole Miss is -120 to make the CFP quarterfinals and +360 to make the CFP semifinals.

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m just ready to watch some damn football.
