Oklahoma Sooners see no change in newest CFP rankings on Tuesday

by

The latest College Football Playoff rankings from the CFP selection committee were released on Tuesday night, and the Oklahoma Sooners saw no change from last week’s placement in the rankings. With just two rankings releases left (December 2nd and December 7th), OU stayed put at No. 8 in the committee’s eyes.

It was going to be tough for the Sooners to move up, as they’re once again the highest-ranked two-loss team in the country after Week 13. With Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M all undefeated and all locked into the top three slots currently, one-loss teams Georgia, Texas Tech, Oregon and Ole Miss occupied spots 4-7.

The good thing for the Sooners is, they didn’t see a drop, even after Notre Dame (ranked ninth) got a lot of style points with a 70-7 win over Syracuse last week, while OU beat Missouri 17-6. A win over LSU would very likely put Oklahoma in the playoff, but if you believe in doomsday scenarios, it bodes well for the Sooners that they continue to be ranked ahead of Notre Dame, Alabama, BYU, Miami, Utah, Vanderbilt and Michigan. If there’s a decision to be made where OU could be on the chopping block against the likes of the Fighting Irish or the Hurricanes, it looks like the committee still prefers the Sooners, at least at this point.

Staying at No. 8 would also mean that OU would host a first-round playoff game at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, which would obviously be huge for the program. If the Sooners lose to LSU this weekend they’ll no doubt be left out, but if OU can win on Saturday, they’ll very likely be in the bracket.

Of course, teams are looking to make it inside the top ten in the rankings, as the ACC champion and the highest-ranked Group of Five conference champion will both be ranked outside of the top 12. They both get automatic bids, meaning the No. 11 and No. 12 teams would be kicked out to make room for the auto bid teams.

Rivalry Week approaches in college football, but it’s pretty simple for the Sooners. With Tuesday night’s placement back at No. 8, a win over the Tigers on Saturday should be enough to get Brent Venables’ team into the CFP.
