After dominant performances at the WBCA Showcase, Iowa women’s basketball star center Ava Heiden has earned USBWA National Player of the Week honors, according to an announcement by the United States Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
Against then-No. 10 Baylor on Thursday, the 6-foot-4 Sherwood, Oregon native, logged her third double-double of the season with a team-high 18 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists, helping the Hawkeyes secure their first ranked victory of the season.

Heiden was done there, as she led Iowa’s offensive attack against Miami, with 20 points and six rebounds to clinch the WBCA Showcase Championship. Adding to the spectacular outing, the sophomore center started Saturday’s game 9-of-9 from the floor through three quarters of action.
The honor adds to Heiden’s well-deserved list of recognition, which also includes being named as the Big Ten Player of the Week.
Through six games played, Heiden leads the team in scoring (15.8 ppg), rebounding (8.8 rpg), and field goal percentage (63), which ranks No. 21 nationally.
Up next for Heiden and the rest of the Iowa squad will be a matchup against the Western Illinois Leathernecks (4-0) from Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, and the game will stream exclusively on B1G+ (subscription required).
