FSU basketball struggles in second half in loss to No. 8 Oklahoma

by

Florida State women’s basketball (4-5) had one of its better offensive performances against a top-worthy opponent in No. 8 Oklahoma (7-1), but a struggling second half led to a 109-91, Great Egret Division final of the GEICO Coconut Hoops tournament on Sunday night at Alico Arena.

It was a record-breaking shooting night for FSU. The Seminoles shot 19 3s out of 41 attempts. It was the most 3s FSU made in a game since the Miami game last season on Jan. 1.

The Seminoles would make at least five three-pointers in three of the four different quarters. Sydney Bowles tied her career best with six 3s, finishing the night with 18 points.

Jasmine Shavers, who was the top scorer with 24 points for the Noles, dropped four three-pointers. Emma Risch also nailed four 3s, adding 16 points off the bench.

While FSU was hanging around with OU throughout the first half, trailing 43-42 heading into the locker room, the Sooners still had the upper hand. The Seminoles ran out of gas in the second half, getting outscored 66-49.

While they were still chunking up 3s, it was not enough to stop the Sooners’ offense. OU’s freshman star Aaliyah Chavez dropped 29 points for the Sooners and was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

With the Seminoles back under .500, they return to the Donald L. Tucker Center on Wednesday to take on undefeated Georgia (9-0) at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Then they will host No. 19 Notre Dame on Sunday at 2 p.m.
