CHICAGO — The Cubs added some veteran experience to their depth chart on Tuesday, signing utility man Scott Kingery to a Minor League contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training with the big league club.
While the bulk of Chicago’s position-player group is set at the Major League level, the ballclub has a need for depth behind the main infield group. One of the Cubs’ tasks this offseason is to fortify the bench options, including the potential reinforcements one level down with Triple-A Iowa.
In Kingery, the Cubs are adding a 31-year-old utility man who has played in parts of six seasons in the Majors with the Phillies (2018-22) and Angels (2025). Kingery can offer a backup option for second base, shortstop and third base, while also providing experience in the outfield as well.
Last season, Kingery appeared in just 19 games for the Angels, going 4-for-27 at the plate. He hit .228 with a .686 OPS in 59 games with Triple-A Salt Lake in ’25. Overall, Kingery has hit .227 with a .660 OPS in 344 Major League games in his career. His best season was in ’19, when he posted 2.7 bWAR with 19 homers, 34 doubles, 55 RBIs, 15 steals and a .788 OPS for the Phillies.
As things stand right now for the Cubs, the starting infield includes Michael Busch (first), Nico Hoerner (second), Dansby Swanson (shortstop) and Matt Shaw (third). Infield prospects James Triantos and Pedro Ramirez were added to the 40-man roster last month and will also be given a look this spring.
