Carlos Alcaraz shocks Mattia Bellucci: 'I had no idea what to do'

by

Mattia Bellucci faced Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the US Open. The Italian gave everything but experienced a 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 defeat in an hour and 36 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Bellucci left the greatest tennis stadium visibly stunned after enduring a one-sided loss. The Italian spoke about the match and explained that while Alcaraz and Sinner already look intimidating on TV, the real shock comes when a player stands across the net.

Mattia felt outclassed in every area, struggling to construct points or find any foothold in the match. The Italian said the gap felt far greater than against other top names he has faced.

He described his Arthur Ashe Stadium experience as a level of tennis he simply could not match. His reflections highlight how overwhelming the sport's new giants can be, especially on the most notable stage.

Alcaraz collected 37 points more than Bellucci and left him miles behind in the opening two sets. The favorite faced no break points and kept the pressure on the other side, the pace his rival failed to follow.

The Italian gave away 53% of the points in his games and played against 17 break points. Carlos seized seven to control the pace and sail over the top. The Spaniard landed 32 winners and 23 unforced errors.

He attacked and made no mistakes at the net. Alcaraz was off to a brilliant start. Alcaraz claimed 12 of 13 games in the opening two sets and brought them home in 58 minutes for a massive advantage.

The 22-year-old secured his ninth bagel at Majors in the second set before his rival raised his level a bit early in the third set. Mattia claimed three games and stayed on the positive side.

Still, the Spaniard delivered breaks in games seven and nine to mover over the top and send his rival packing.

"Carlos and Jannik look impressive on TV, but facing them on the court is much worse. There was not a single aspect where I felt on par with Alcaraz. I did not know how to build points, and how to stay in the match.

Against other 'big' players, I have felt closer tennis-wise; against Carlos, I thought 'I do not know what to do,'" Mattia Bellucci said.
