DENVER – Onetime Rockies front office executive Josh Byrnes will return to the team as the club’s new general manager, according to Major League sources.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first to report the move, which has not been officially announced by the Rockies.
The hiring of Byrnes, 55, signals that new Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta is making how the Rockies acquire and develop players a priority. Byrnes has spent the last 11 seasons as the Dodgers’ senior vice president, baseball operations, overseeing the club’s scouting and player development.
Byrnes served as general manager of the Diamondbacks (2005-2010) and Padres (2011-2014), and has a deep history with the Rockies. After beginning his career with Cleveland in 1994 and rising through the scouting ranks to the scouting directorship in ’98, Byrnes joined GM Dan O’Dowd as part of Colorado’s new front office after the ’99 season.
In Cleveland, Byrnes worked with DePodesta, O’Dowd and Bill Schmidt, who stepped down as the Rockies’ GM after the 2024 season.
After leaving the Rockies, Byrnes served as assistant GM with the Red Sox 2003-05, a period that included a World Series championship in ‘04. Byrnes has three World Series titles with the Dodgers (2020, 2024, 2025).
