A trio of Auburn football defenders set to enter transfer portal

Auburn head coach Alex Golesh has handled signing day and has most of his inaugural staff in place. Now, he must focus on the next step in the offseason, the transfer portal.

Despite the window not opening for another four weeks, many players have already declared their intentions to search for new homes, including three Auburn defenders.

Multiple reports from On3 show that Auburn defensive back Raion Strader, defensive tackle Antonio Coleman, and linebacker Caleb Wheatland will enter the transfer portal in January after spending one season on the Plains.

Strader joined Auburn’s roster as a transfer from Miami (Ohio), where he logged 110 tackles and three interceptions in two seasons. However, his time at Auburn was limited to playing in just five games as a cornerback, where he made nine total tackles. His best game came in Auburn’s 31-15 win over South Alabama, where he logged four tackles.

Wheatland was another player who was expected to make an impact this season, but only saw action in one game. He made one tackle in Auburn’s 62-17 win over Mercer in November after making 100 tackles and 7.5 sacks in three seasons at Maryland.

Finally, Antonio Coleman signed with Auburn as part of its 2025 class as the No. 11 player from Alabama and the No. 19 defensive lineman from the class. Coleman was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules early in the season, and never managed to make his way into the line rotation. Before his time at Auburn, he flipped his commitment between the Tigers and rival Alabama several times. Could the Crimson Tide be a player in his transfer process?

The transfer portal opens Jan. 2 and will remain open until Jan. 16.
