Fever teammate urged Caitlin Clark to join Project B League

by

In the latest airing of the “Show Me Something” podcast on Dec. 4, Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham not only revealed that she will be joining the newest offseason league, Project B, but also shared insight into teammate Caitlin Clark’s plans regarding the new WNBA-alternative.

During Cunningham’s casual description of the new league and attempt to differentiate it from similar offseason competitors like Unrivaled and Athletes Unlimited (AU), the energetic veteran stated that the numerous leagues have the platform to thrive on because of the recent attention gained by the WNBA over the past few seasons.

“So like, here’s my thing. All these leagues are great, but at the end of the day, if you don’t have the W (WNBA), you don’t have the platform. So you don’t have the eyes, you don’t have the recognition,” Cunningham stated.

After co-host Wes Wilson jokingly responded to Cunningham by referencing embattled WNBA Commissioner Cathy Englebert’s outlandish comments claiming Caitlin Clark should be grateful for the WNBA’s platform by stating, “That’s right, Caitlin Clark. You have the W.”

Cunningham then revealed that she had attempted to lure the Hawkeyes legend to play in the Project B league, but Clark vehemently declined the invitation.

“I tried to get her to play in this one,” Cunningham said. “She’s like ‘No.'”

While Cunningham did not elaborate on her attempt to get the two-time WNBA All-Star into the Project B league, Clark’s rejection falls in line with the Fever star’s offseason plans to avoid any risks that could jeopardize her ability to play in the next WNBA season and potentially for Team USA in the upcoming 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in September.

While the payout for the new league is reportedly substantially higher than its competitors and light-years beyond the WNBA’s current salary, the opportunity to make more money while playing internationally in Project B is likely not a concern to Clark, given she was just named No. 6 on Sportico’s highest-paid female athletes of 2025 list.
