As No. 12 Iowa women’s basketball (8-0) prepares for its Big Ten regular-season opener against Rutgers (7-2) on Saturday, Dec. 6, from Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway, N.J., former Hawkeye star and 2025 WNBA champion Megan Gustafson sent a very heartfelt message to head coach Jan Jensen to wish her a happy birthday.
While Gustafson excelled at Iowa when Jensen was an assistant coach on Hawkeyes head coach Lisa Bluder’s staff, the bond between the two remains strong and enduring, as it does with every other former player who has gone through the Iowa program.
“Happy Birthday!! @goiowa! Myself and all of Hawkeye Nation love you to pieces!”
During a memorable four-year tenure at Iowa from 2015-19, Gustafson averaged 20.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1.1 assists per game on 65.6% shooting from the floor, 50% from 3-point territory, and 76.8% from the free-throw line. The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native was honored as the Naismith Trophy winner following the 2018-19 women’s college basketball season.

Gustafson is also one of three former Iowa women’s basketball players to have their numbers retired and hung in the rafters of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, with her No. 10 hanging alongside Michelle Edwards’ No. 30 and Caitlin Clark’s No. 22.
The Hawkeyes will look to gift coach Jensen a birthday victory this evening against the Scarlet Knights, which tips off at 5 p.m. CT on FS1.
