St. Charles Prep (Ohio) Rips Pair of Lightning-Quick Relays at Ned Reeb Invite
Over the weekend, St. Charles Prep (Ohio) registered two of the fastest relay times in the history of high school swimming. Competing at the Ned Reeb Invitational, held at Ohio State University’s McCorkle Pavilion, St. Charles posted a time of 1:27.27 in the 200-yard medley relay. Later in the meet, it clocked 1:19.49 in the 200 freestyle relay. Both performances rank as the third-fastest efforts in scholastic competition.
Alex Wu led off the St. Charles medley relay with a backstroke split of 22.69, setting the stage for Jake Lloyd to log a spectacular 23.92 split on the breaststroke leg. A 21.26 butterfly leg from Caden Mahl followed while Austin Carpenter closed out the relay with a freestyle anchor of 19.40. The Bolles School owns the high school record in the 200 medley relay, thanks to a 1:26.67 mark at last month’s Florida 1A Championships, while Hinsdale Central (Ill.) has the second-fastest time at 1:26.75.
St. Charles wasn’t the only school to record a speedy performance in the 200 medley relay at the Ned Reeb Invitational, as St. Igantius (Ohio) was second in 1:27.93. The St. Ignatius squad featured Ian Kimak (22.94), Elijah Banks (23.97), Jaime Hong (21.34) and Thor Johannessen (19.68).
In the 200 freestyle relay, the St. Charles foursome of Carpenter (19.94), Mahl (20.21), Wu (19.94) and Lloyd (19.50) produced a time of 1:19.49, not far off Bolles’ national record of 1:19.27.
