Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is officially fighting back against federal charges tied to an alleged sports-betting scheme. The 31-year-old entered a not guilty plea in a Brooklyn federal courtroom, where he faced accusations of wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracy in connection with wagers placed during his time with the Charlotte Hornets.

Rozier, wearing a gray suit, spoke only to answer the judge’s yes or no questions, but his attorney Jim Trusty delivered a clear message afterward, saying his client was “excited” to begin his defense. A motion to dismiss the case on constitutional grounds will be filed shortly, and he pressed the court to move things along quickly, noting that Rozier is managing “multiple layers of litigation, including arbitration with the NBA,” according to Trusty.
Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall, however, made it clear the court would not be swayed by outside circumstances, stating, “Arbitration with the league is of no concern for me.”
She set the next hearing for March 3rd, with prosecutors preparing to turn over what they described as “voluminous” evidence, including 1000 documents and more than 55 gigabytes of data.
Prosecutors allege Rozier informed bettors that he planned to exit a March 2023 game early due to a supposed injury, a move they say allowed gamblers to win tens of thousands of dollars. Rozier played 9 minutes and 36 seconds before leaving with a reported foot issue and did not return that season.
He was released on a $3 million bond secured by properties in Florida and was ordered not to gamble, possess firearms, or contact witnesses, victims, or co-defendants. He also surrendered his passport.
Rozier is one of more than 30 individuals swept up in a wide federal investigation into illegal sports gambling tied to organized crime. Damon Jones and Chauncey Billups are also implicated in related cases, both having pleaded not guilty.
Rozier, a former first-round pick who has earned roughly $160 million across a ten-year career, remains on unpaid leave from Miami as the case unfolds.
