Taylor Townsend makes (surprise) change after winning Slam, reaching No. 1 in doubles

Taylor Townsend enjoyed an outstanding 2025 season, but still decided to call time on her partnership with coach John Williams.

Townsend, who started working with Williams in 2021, won four doubles with Katerina Siniakova this year, with their biggest triumph coming at the Australian Open. The American/Czech were also very close to collecting the US Open crown, but fell just short in a three-set final.

This year, Townsend also reached the doubles world No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career – it happened after she and Siniakova reached the Wimbledon semifinal. Overall, the American posted a 44-10 record in doubles this year.

In singles, Townsend also managed to make some noise after upsetting Jelena Ostapenko and Mirra Andreeva en route to reaching the US Open round-of-16.

On paper, it was a great year for the 29-year-old American. But still, she will head into 2026 without the coach she had collaborated for four years.

Townsend was in the center of attention during the US Open

If you can recall, Townsend found herself in the centre of attention during the US Open after Ostapenko said that she had "no class" and "no education." The American was widely praised for she handled the entire situation.

"It was an opportunity for the world to see the work that I've been doing. As athletes, and in professional sports, you see the end result, you see the outcomes of all the hours and all the things. But I think the biggest way that it changed me was my self-worth got to be on display, the way that I've been working on myself and the person that I am. How I want to show up in the world, it was tested — but then it was also displayed," Townsend said.
