DP World Tour: Schaper beats Norris in playoff

by

South African Jayden Schaper won the Alfred Dunhill Championship with a 198 (67, 64, 67, -16) shot, defeating compatriot Shaun Norris (198, 67, 69, 62) in a playoff, with whom he had tied in the tournament organized jointly by the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour. The event, played at the Royal Johannesburg Club (East Course, par 72 then par 70 in the third round), was shortened from 72 to 54 holes due to bad weather that prevented play on the third day.

Jayden Schaper, a 24-year-old from Benoni who has turned pro since 2020, earned his first DP World Tour win, also earning him his first on the Sunshine Tour, with a closing 67 (-3, five birdies, two bogeys), preventing Norris from overtaking him with a 62 (-8, one eagle, seven birdies, one bogey). Norris was defending his title from last year with a remarkable comeback to climb from 13th place. He attempted to repeat the feat starting from the 17th, but after the tie, despite making a birdie, he was helpless against his opponent's eagle putt in the playoff. Schaper was rewarded with €255,000 from a prize pool of €1,500,000.

In third place with a score of 199 (-15) was Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, who had experience on the LIV Golf course, then in fourth with a score of 201 (-13), completing the triumph of the home players, Oliver Bekker, Christiaan Burke, and Louis Oosthuizen, another member of the Arab Super League. In seventh with a score of 202 (-12) were England's John Parry and France's Martin Couvra.

Andrea Pavan fell in the third round, going from tenth to 64th with a score of 211 (68 67 76, -3), and Guido Migliozzi, 89th with a score of 143 (69 74, -1), and Francesco Laporta, 139th with a score of 148 (77 71, +4), both bowed out at the cut after two rounds.

The Rules of Golf are a set of standards and procedures by which the sport of golf should be played. They are jointly written and administered by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the governing body of golf worldwide, except in the United States and Mexico, which are governed by the United States Golf Association. An expert committee composed of members of the R&A and the USGA oversees and refines the rules every four years. The latest revision took effect on January 1, 2016. Amendments to the Rules of Golf are generally divided into two main categories: those that improve understanding and those that reduce penalties in certain cases to ensure balance. The rulebook, entitled "Rules of Golf," is published regularly and also includes rules governing amateur status. In Italy, the Italian Golf Federation is responsible for overseeing competitions by enforcing the rules issued by the R&A, ensuring that these rules are observed by clubs, associations, and their members, and managing the resulting sporting justice, protecting their interests abroad.
