John Isner put Daniil Medvedev on his "naughty list," but the 2018 Wimbledon semifinalist noted that it wasn't because of the Russian's personality but because he has a tendency to rack up fines.
On the latest episode of the Nothing Major Show, Isner, Sam Querrey, Steve Johnson and Jack Sock decided to play a little game and make "a naughty list." Some players found themselves called out not because of their game, but more because of their personality.
When making his pick, former world No. 8 Isner named the Russian. However, the ex-American tennis star was quick to highlight that he wasn't shading the 2021 US Open champion or anything like that.
"It’s gonna be Medvedev, not for his off-court antics, but his on-court antics. You rack up a couple of hundred thousand dollars’ worth of fines across the year, you’re on the naughty list. Australia had a big one. China Open had a big one. The US Open had a big one," Isner said on the Nothing Major Show.
What Medvedev said about his on-court antics?
Just before kicking off his US Open campaign and delivering a stunning meltdown that saw him spark a massive riot and create a six-minute delay, Medvedev said that he was usually calm off the court and that his on-court antics happen only because his adrenaline is at its peak.
"Off the court it is rare there is a situation where my adrenaline goes through the roof. When I'm on the court I hate to lose; I love to win. My first goal is to win the match, so it brings a lot of adrenaline out and it brings all the energy out. Sometimes it is a good energy. Sometimes it is a bad one," the 29-year-old explained just before the US Open.
After losing to Benjamin Bonzi in the US Open first round, Medvedev refused to talk too much about what happened on the court because he was already expecting a huge fine. In the end, the former world No. 1 was slapped with a $42.500 fine.
