Point guard Kambree Zummer got McAlester on the right track early, hitting two 3-pointers en route to a 15-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
East Central answered back in the second period and outscored the Lady Buffaloes 14-8.
McAlester had the advantage in the third period, winning it 13-9. The Lady Buffaloes capitalized on free throw opportunities in the fourth quarter, hitting 11 of 16 attempts from the charity stripe to put the game away.
This game showed improvement from recent games. Coach Kourtnee Beshears credited the win to her team’s ability to play together.
“I think that we’re playing on each other’s strengths and using that to our advantage but also just believing in each other,” Beshears said.

Zummer led the way for McAlester in scoring with 19 points on two 3-pointers and going nine of 14 from the free throw line.
Zummer’s patience running the offense was noted by Beshears.
“I think she’s really stepped up into that role of really trying to take control of the tempo of the game and there’s a time to go and there’s a not to go,” Beshears said.
Though it was a win, Beshears said there’s still room for improvement.
One area Beshears would like to get better at is not playing sloppy with turnovers and simple mistakes as a team with as many young players as they have.
“The things that we do work, we just have to clean it up,” Beshears said. “I think that comes with us just being so young.”

Thursday night will have McAlester in a rematch against Glenpool.
The Lady Buffaloes fell to the Lady Warriors last week 65-19, but Beshears said that won’t stop her team from competing.
“They’re just a really good team,” Beshears said. “However, we’re going to go into it with the intentions of preparing to win, doing everything we can to win and going out there and just try to work as hard as we can.”
McAlester plays at 6 p.m. Thursday at Glenpool.
