The lone mainstream MMA appearance for Gholar came at UFC 18 on Jan. 8, 1999, in Kenner, La. In a 15-minute bout at 199 pounds, he battled future title challenger Evan Tanner and was submitted in under eight minutes.

Gholar competed 11 times as a professional MMA fighter, compiling a 5-6 record from 1998 to 2001.

But Gholar’s most notable athletic accomplishments came on the wrestling mats. The captain of the University of Minnesota wrestling, Gholar was a three-time U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling champion, an alternate for the 1998 Olympic team, and the captain of the 1986 United States world team. He also won the World Vale Tudo championship.

Gholar was also featured on the hit series “American Gladiator” in 2001 and was awarded the Medal of Courage from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
