Daria Saville has a bold prediction amid the Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrero split news as the one-time WTA champion believes the two will be back together.
On Wednesday, Alcaraz rocked the entire tennis world when he announced that he and Ferrero were done as a team. They worked for seven years and achieved massive success.
Not only did Alcaraz become one of the best players in the world under the guidance of Ferrero, but he is also coming off a season during which he won two Grand Slams and finished as the Year-End No. 1. That makes his coaching move even more baffling.
Saville: I have a feeling Alcaraz and Ferrero will get back together
“I was actually really sad, it’s an iconic duo, and every split with a coach feels like a breakup. That’s the other thing, we don’t know how well Carlitos is going to play at this year’s AO, because there’s a bit of a grief moment. I also have a feeling they will get back together. Juan Carlos did say, ‘Maybe one day we will cross paths again.’ I feel like he will be kind of in his corner the whole time," former world No. 20 Saville said on The Tennis podcast.
After predicting an Alcaraz and Ferrero reunion, Saville also said that she didn't expect the six-time Grand Slam champion to instantly find a new coach.
“I don’t actually think he’s going to be hiring anyone, anytime soon, because he’s got an established team,” Saville added.
Saville then explained her claim by saying that players usually fire coaches when they aren't getting the desired results or when a coach can't commit to traveling with a player. She noted that Alcaraz definitely didn't ditch the 2003 French Open champion because of those reasons.
“But I don’t think that’s the case, because he said ‘I wish I could have continued.' And then contract, money, agreement. But I’ve never split with a coach because of that," Saville concluded.
