This transfer portal season has seen more than a few departures from Notre Dame football’s roster, and on Friday afternoon, that number grew two more players.
First it was safety Taebron Bennie-Powell, who signed out of Ohio as a three-star prospect, announcing his intentions to enter the transfer portal. He was passed up by a few players this season, and played sparingly this season. He’ll have three years remaining after redshirting his freshman season.

The second Irish player who intends to enter the portal is Gi’Bran Payne, who looked like he was going to have a much bigger role this coming fall with Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price moving on to the NFL. I had him second on a very early depth chart, but he clearly didn’t see it that way. There is potential that Payne will have two seasons of eligibility, but he’ll have at least one remaining.
It’s unfortunate to see both Bennie-Powell and Payne leave Notre Dame’s program, but that’s what happens when you are recruiting the way that head coach Marcus Freeman has over the last few cycles. We with both Taebron and Gi’Bran the best at their new football homes.
