BOCA RATON, FL βΒ A zany, pun-filled bowl gameΒ wasΒ theΒ comedic relief thatΒ LouisvilleΒ footballΒ neededΒ after an inconsistent and, atΒ times,Β head-scratchingΒ 2025 season.
A bountiful supply of baked beans and bean paraphernalia was at the teamβs disposal leading up toΒ the Boca Raton Bowl,Β sponsored byΒ BushβsΒ BakedΒ Beans, on Tuesday.

Literal comedianΒ Keegan-Michael Key, whose iconic football parody from Key and Peele is still circulatingΒ onΒ social media, was the bowl spokesperson.
But even the relaxed environment and warmer weather in DecemberΒ couldnβtΒ relieve UofL of the same problemsΒ itβsΒ had all year. The Cardinalsβ offenseΒ was up-and-downΒ while the defense held up in theΒ 27-22Β win overΒ ToledoΒ atΒ Flagler Credit Union Stadium.Β The two teams combined for 32 points in the fourth quarter after only scoring 10 in the first half.
With many of the running backs in doubt,Β Isaac BrownΒ andΒ Keyjuan BrownΒ were backΒ and helped to provide a spark for theΒ CardsβΒ offense, combining for214Β rushing yards andΒ twoΒ touchdowns.Β But the only Duke represented on the fieldΒ wasΒ the Bushβs dog mascot,Β whose face and tailΒ comprisedΒ the coin for the flip.Β Running backΒ Duke WatsonΒ was out of the game with an injury.
Keyjuan Brown got the start and opened the game with a 31-yard run. The drive ended withΒ Miller MossβΒ 17-yard touchdown pass toΒ TreyShun Hurry. But the offense stalled after that for the rest of the half. A missed field goal,Β fumbleΒ and an inability to convert on third down kept the Cardinals fromΒ getting any more pointsΒ against Toledoβs defense, which ranksΒ No. 2 among FBS teams.

Keyjuan BrownΒ and Isaac Brown then ignited the offense in the second half, helping the Cardinals take a 21-3 lead. Keyjuan had three straight runs for 27 yards to set upΒ MossβΒ 5-yard touchdown pass toΒ Antonio Meeks, andΒ Isaac ran in an 11-yard touchdown on the next drive at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Although theΒ CardsΒ didnβtΒ scoreΒ much in the first half, ToledoΒ didnβt, either. The Rockets were held to a 41-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter.Β Three of their four drives in the second quarter were three-and-outs for 48Β totalΒ yards.
ToledoΒ freshmanΒ quarterbackΒ Kalieb Osborne spoiled the Cardinalsβ second-half shutout with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Petersen. ChipΒ TrayanumΒ then ran in the 2-point conversion after a defensive holding penalty for the 21-11 scoreΒ five minutes into the final quarter.
Even after UofL lost one of its leaders in defensive linemanΒ Clev Lubin, who was called forΒ targeting withΒ 7:53 left in the game, the unit held strong.Β Micah CarterΒ sacked OsborneΒ on the next play,Β but the Rockets still came away with pointsΒ during the driveΒ via a 50-yard field goal.

In true cardiacΒ CardinalsΒ fashion, the game was wacky until the end. Isaac Brownβs 53-yard rushing touchdown was followed byΒ eight Toledo points. ThatΒ includedΒ Avery SmithΒ blocking theΒ extra pointΒ after Isaacβs score and running it backΒ for the safetyΒ and 27-22 Louisville advantage.
Tempers later flaredΒ whileΒ LouisvilleΒ ateΒ upΒ the final 2 minutes, 24 seconds,Β with a brawl breaking out on the Cardinalsβ sideline.Β Both teams were called for unsportsmanlike conductΒ once the dust settled, and the Cardinals kneeled out the final 1:27.
