They are ranked No. 12 in this week’s AP Top 25, No. 21 in KenPom, No. 20 by EvanMiya.com, are a projected No. 5 seed today by Joe Lunardi, and ESPN’s ACC power index has the Tar Heels as the fifth-best team in the conference behind Duke, Louisville, NC State and Clemson.

While all of those are solid rankings in their own right, depending on the data they use, an extremely important ranking is the NET. NET, short for NCAA Evaluation Tool, is a metric used to assess and compare the overall strength and performance of college basketball teams.

Introduced by the NCAA in 2018 to replace the RPI, the NET measures and compares the overall strength of college basketball teams. Each team’s rating is based on game results, strength of schedule, game location (home, away or neutral), scoring margin (with a cap) and net efficiency (points scored versus allowed per possession).

The goal is to give the selection committee a clearer view of team quality for NCAA Tournament seeding and at-large bids. A higher NET rating indicates a stronger rΓ©sumΓ© and tougher overall competition.

The NET ranks North Carolina at No. 15, second in the ACC behind only Duke.

The Tar Heels are 4-0 with Seth Trimble in the lineup, with a home win over NET No. 16 Kansas, a neutral-site win over No. 43 Ohio State, and victories over Central Arkansas and East Carolina by a combined 88 points. North Carolina’s remaining schedule includes eight games against Quad 1 opponents and five each against Quad 2 and Quad 3 opponents.

Below are the NET rankings for every ACC team as well as UNC’s nonconference opponents. Also listed is UNC’s current rΓ©sumΓ© in Quad 1, 2, 3 and 4 games.
