Former Michigan Wolverines analyst Connor Stalions, who is widely known for the role he played in the Wolverines‘ sign-stealing scandal, offered a bold take about the Georgia Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart. Stalions thinks that Georgia is going to win the national championship this season, but he does not consider Smart to be the best coach in college football.
Instead, he thinks Indiana‘s Curt Cignetti is the best coach in college football. It is hard to disagree with some of Stalions’ logic.

“Kirby (Smart) this, Kirby that,” Stalions said in a social media post. “Look, I think Kirby’s elite and wins the natty this year if I had to put money on it. But Kirby’s the head coach at the University of Georgia at Athens.
“Curt’s (Cignetti) the head coach at Indiana Bloomington. We’re talking probably the best job in America (Georgia) in a vacuum vs the now 2nd losingest program in the history of college football.”

Cignetti’s rise at Indiana has been impressive and winning the Big Ten with Indiana is one of the most incredible coaching accomplishments in recent memory. However, Indiana shies away from major nonconference opponents and still has to prove themselves in the College Football Playoff this season.

Kirby Smart has won two national championships, which is tied for the most among active head coaches along with Clemson’s Dabo Swinney. Smart has won four SEC championships during his time at Georgia. When you look at the full picture, Smart is a better coach than Cignetti, but for just the 2025 season, it is hard to argue with Cignetti’s results especially when factoring in that he coaches at a historically weak program.
