Former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher might not return to coaching in the near future after taking a position with the ACC Network. Still, for another former Aggie coach, a spot back on the sideline is now guaranteed, as Kevin Sumlin is headed back to the UFL to coach the Houston Gamblers, a job he held during the 2022 season.
Sumlin’s coaching career, primarily in college, included a four-year stint as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, before becoming Houston’s head coach from 2008-2011, leading the Cougars to a 35-17 record over four seasons, including a 12-1 record in 2011.

After replacing Mike Sherman as Texas A&M’s head coach before the memorable 2012 season, Sumlin’s career in College Station looked extremely bright. However, after star quarterback Johnny Manziel led the 2012 Aggie roster to an 11-2 finish, including a road win over No. 1 Alabama and the program’s second Heisman Trophy, things went downhill more quickly than expected.
After Manziel departed following the 9-4 2013 campaign, Texas A&M finished a disappointing 8-5 in three straight seasons and 7-5 in 2017 before Sumlin was eventually dismissed and replaced by Jimbo Fisher for the next season.
After three dismal seasons as Arizona’s head coach, finishing 9-20, Sumlin took a year off before the Houston Gamblers came calling, spending one season in the UFL, finishing 3-7. Following a brief stint as an assistant head coach with Maryland, Sumlin is back with the Gamblers and will look to reignite his coaching career.
